Two drivers, including the common law husband of a mother who died after a road rage confrontation, were charged Thursday in connection with the incident.

Marcos Alfonso Briones Madrid, 22, was charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving and three counts of child abuse. His Dodge Intrepid allegedly sideswiped a 1979 GMC pickup truck about 12:43 a.m. Tuesday on Sheridan Boulevard, sending the pickup into oncoming traffic where it collided with a 2000 Ford Excursion.

Alicia Arana, 26, and two of her three children, were ejected from the truck. Arana died Wednesday after she was taken off life support.

Arana’s common law husband, Jesus Manuel Cruz, 27, who was driving the pickup, was charged with driving while ability impaired, hit-and-run and following too closely.

Cruz allegedly rear-ended Madrid’s Intrepid on northbound Federal Boulevard and did not stop, according to police. Madrid allegedly chased the pickup, caught up to it at Sheridan Boulevard and West Cedar Avenue and then sideswiped Cruz’s truck.

The Intrepid and the Excursion that collided with the pickup drove away. Police later found the Excursion abandoned.

Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez said the child abuse charges against Madrid were filed because authorities suspect he knew children were in the pickup when he hit it.

The three children, ages 8, 6 and 5, according to family, were taken to Children’s Hospital. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening. It was not known Thursday if they were still hospitalized.

Police initially believed the SUV was stolen, but Lopez said it was not. She also said that investigators had been in contact with the driver of the Excursion.

Police said none of the passengers in the pickup were wearing seat belts.
