Denver police held the grand opening of the city’s fourth COP Shop Thursday afternoon.

The Broadway COP Shop, at One Broadway, is an all-volunteer service where the public can report nonserious crimes and find information about other city services.

“It relieves our workload,” said Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman, “but the relationships that develop out of the volunteers running the storefront are really valuable.”

Whitman said there are three other COP Shops in the city and that the effort to use more volunteers is based on a program in San Diego.

Tim Lopez, a volunteer at the Broadway COP Shop, said there are 27 volunteers working four-hour shifts at the location from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

He said the goal is to have 40 volunteers working so the shop can stay open until 7 p.m. all week.

Whitman said the COP Shops – it stands for Community Operated Policing Storefront – are important because they help fight crime through community building.

“If these are going to work . . . they really have to be run by the neighborhoods,” he said.

Those who wish to become COP Shop volunteers can call 720-974-7323.
