A state motor vehicles employee pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to illegally selling Colorado driver’s licenses last year.

Janet Gonzalez, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of using the U.S. Postal Service to carry out bribery and two counts of fraud in connection with producing identification documents.

Gonzalez was accused of illegally selling driver’s licenses and learner’s permits from June 28 to Aug. 10 last year, and between Nov. 22 and Nov. 24, while she was a license examiner in the Northglenn office of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Judge Walker Miller said Thursday he would not accept or reject Gonzalez’s plea agreement until he receives the pretrial investigation report. Gonzalez’s next court appearance is slated for early November.

She and two other former DMV employees have been charged in a broad federal investigation into the illegal sale and purchase of state driver’s licenses.

Gonzalez faces a maximum sentence of five years, $250,000 in fines and up to three years supervised release on the bribery charge. She faces a combined maximum of 15 years in prison, $250,000 in fines and three years supervised release on the fraud counts.

However, Assistant U.S. Attorney William Taylor said his office will not seek prison time beyond 37 months.

Gonzalez was accused of working with a middleman, Juan Pablo Beltran, 40, who for several years allegedly sent her at least one customer every week to buy a commercial or regular license for up to $2,500.

Beltran, an El Salvadoran national who lives in Aurora, pleaded guilty early last month to forging a medical certificate to help an illegal immigrant buy a state commercial driver’s license.
