A bandit trying to rob a liquor store in the Cole neighborhood on Wednesday shot and killed a man inside the business.

The victim died from a gunshot wound about 3:30 p.m. at Denver Health Medical Center, Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez said.

He was either an employee or an owner of Canary Liquors at Bruce Randolph Avenue and Gilpin Street, Lopez said.

Police said they believe the victim sustained one bullet wound. Witnesses told detectives they may have heard as many as three gunshots, Lopez said.

The victim, who appeared to be in his 50s or 60s, was not identified. Detectives and the coroner’s office were attempting to contact his relatives late Wednesday.

Detectives do not believe any other employees or customers were inside the liquor store when the attack occurred, Lopez said.

Officers were called to the store at about 1 p.m. When police found the victim, they were not certain whether the shooting was the result of a robbery attempt or a personal confrontation between the victim and the gunman, Lopez said.

Eventually, detectives determined the gunman had robbed the store, she said.

Witnesses told police they saw a man wearing a black cap with a red bandanna and khaki-colored shorts near the store about the time the robbery happened and then saw him immediately leave the area.
